makin' a list an checkin' it twice

ahhh...it's that time of year again. the time for the yearly resolutions.

i love lists. i had a christmas list for my kids. i always have a grocery list. i have a list of coupons. i have lists of stuff i should not forget to do. i make lists of stuff randy should not forget to do. i make lists for my kids.

however.....i hate new years resolutions. it seems like if you have seen one list you have seen them all!

i don't want to diet (not that i shouldn't or don't want to be skinny)
i don't want to stop eating sugar (not that i shouldn't - i am addicted)
i sure as heck exercise the way it is. (maybe more I should - more yoga would be nice)
i'm not in debt. (not that i don't want a new suv)
i have an emergency fund.(i could save more)

here is a list more my speed....

be happy with the way i look.
find joy in something every. single. morning.
find joy in something every. single afternoon.
find joy in something every. single. evening.
compliment atleast one stranger every. single. day.
pay it forward atleast once a week. not only at christmas.
seek change within first.
make split decisions.
never ever regret a split decision.
pray first.
be still.
listen.

if your are a resolution maker - good for you! i admire your willingness to take a hard look at your life to try and make a change for the better. if you are not resolutioner - but a "a list is my life every. single. day." - good for you! I think our goals/lists are important even they are made on some random day in june.

i think the important thing is moving forward and making personal improvements as need be.

i don't think it really matters if it is january 1st or june 2nd.

we all could use a little tweaking now and again.

The God Who Promises

There is a huge blogosphere out there. I have become attached to several. I espcially love the "home" blogs. The pictures of projects. Making a home beautiful on a budget. How to cook yummy suppers and bake delicious desserts.  I love the blogs where the mommy's homeschool. I don't know why. I think I could have homeschooled my kids. (OK - maybe not - but I like to think I MAY have) They just speak to my heart. I love reading about the faith these women have.

I don't "know" these families personally but they have a piece of my heart. I feel like I am getting a glimpse into how other families deal with lifes everydays issues. I get ideas what to have for supper.

I cry. I am inspired. I am speachless. I cry.

A quote from Edie's blog: “God doesn’t give explanations. He gives promises.”

Year in Review

Christmas letters are defintiely controversial. I happen to love them. Each one I got I read several times. I laughed. I smiled. They are the highlight of my Christmas season. I have sent letters in the past but did not even send a card this year. Suddenly it was Christmas and I was so unprepared. Had I been on top of my game - it may have looked like this:

Last Christmas Randy's job was eliminated.  It was an awful couple of weeks. I'm not sure I ever accepted the changes that were forced upon our family but I was working really hard to hold my head up. Then he went in to sign for his severence package.  Then his employer offered him another job! Praise God! We were not going to be self employed. I felt like my world went from dark to light in about five minutes.

Annie was accepted into the Graphic Design program at Kansas State University! This was a huge accomplishment. Our family knew of her talents but it is always nice to have that confirmed by "professionals." She is in her junior year and we are super duper proud of her!

Abe started fifth grade. It is his last year of elementary school. This makes me super duper sad. I can't believe our baby will be in middle school next year. Abe played on a tournament baseball team this summer. It was a blast. He prefers to be the catcher. He is playing again next summer so we will once again be busy. He is also a second degree black belt. We tease him that his hands are lethal weapons. He is my gamer, computer fixer, nerf shooting little buddy!

We bought a very old camper in the spring. I grew up camping and knew how many memories we could make with Abe. We love camping with his cousins and his friends. We are already looking at which weekends we are going to book for next summer.

I made 4 trips to Chicago this year. FOUR! We welcomed the newest little star to our family tree - Lucy Irene! She is precious. She is edible. She is adorable. Her big sister Stella is in the third grade. Stella is in her schools concert choir and in an afterschool spanish program. I love when she speaks spanish to me! Jeff still goes to school and works at an Apple store. Abby is in her second year of seminary, works part time and is a new mommy. THAT makes even me tired.

I've heard that life happens when your making other plans. I have tried to be open and flexible this year. Open to what God has planned for me and not so much what I think I should be doing.

I'm looking forward to a new year spent with family and friends. What else is there?

Burning question

Every time we go to the state fair it makes me think of things I usually don't think about.

What makes a grown adult get into a life size gerbil ball for everybody to watch?

Who does that?

loss for words

Do I have a laptop? or a notebook? I thought I had a laptop. In all the adds for laptops now they are called "notebooks". I thought a macbook was a notebook but I saw a Dell and an HP referred to as notebooks. What on earth do I all it?

First I had a car phone (aka bag phone). Then it was a mobile phone. Now they are cell phones. Everybody has a cell phone. I don't know anybody with a car phone. If I asked a teenager for their mobile number would they know what I was talking about?

This reminds me of when I was a kid. We wore thongs. I won't disclose if I wear a thong now but I for sure have lots of flip flops.

It's Raining. It's Pouring.

We woke up to RAIN! What a cozy way to spend the day at home. Indoors. Making waffles. Drinking coffee. Reading in the window seat. Relaxing.

But we had school and work so that makes the rain not near as much fun.

The kids LOVE walking in the rain for some reason. That involved us hunting down much needed rain gear at 7:35 this morning.

1. Abe's Anorak. Pretty sure it is still in the camper. Not to fret! He can wear mine. I'm not sure why mine wasn't in the camper but anywho - a little big - but he's a trooper.

2. Abe's umbrella. I specifically bought him his own big boy umbrella last year. Today, however, all we could find was a HUGE Mary Poppins black  umbrella and his teeny weeny Spider Man umbrella. Not to fret! He dug through last years backpack in the closet and found his very own (right sized) umbrella.

3. A rain cover for Abe's homemade kite. The kite is in progress and so it could not get wet. It is awkward without the rain. Not to fret! We found a BIG (way TOO big) yellow plastic sack that his entire kite fit in. As well as any elementary kid who may need cover from the rain on the way to school.

I wish I had a picture of my little guy today. I don't so this word picture will have to do.

a rain jacket to his knees. a lunch box in one hand. a BIG yellow plastic bag in one hand. his camo umbrella (somehow)  He left whistling- happy as a lark. walking to school in the rain.

I am pretty sure he forgot to put on his glasses.

there she goes

My baby girl is 20.

Twenty.

10 + 10 = 20

She is grown up.

She left today.

All by herself.

She packed and loaded her car all by herself.

Except for the chair her dad shoved into the backseat for her.

She moved back to college.

She will be a junior. (gulp)

She went all by herself.

We aren't hauling a loft bed that she will wind up not using.

No dorm fridge or XL twin sheets.

We aren't moving furniture for an apartment.

No bed . No dresser. No garage sale jewels for decorating.

Everything is still there from the spring.

The only think missing is her. And her clothes. And her floral chair.

And my waffle iron that is older than her. I'm glad she took it.

And she took the cute old metal typing stand that we painted watermelon pink.

And she drove away.

This is the first year I did not cry.

I wonder why that is.

I'm going up for a visit Friday.

I can hardly wait to see her.

Summer projects

Our little camper! Nuff said about that!

My buffet from the Opera House garage sale. The door fell off when we brought it into the house and Randy said he would not pay me two plug nickels for the thing. In the end he made it look like a million bucks!

Randy and Annie recovered this chair. It was gold velvet. Last summer that was vintage - cool.  This summer that was ugly It will be going to a new home in Manhattan next week. Boo!

Annie painted a record album for Grandma's birthday. Of course, to make things even I got one, too!

Paint by number - my serving tray! There is only one person in my life who would understand "number shopping." Pam and I went on the hunt for the perfect number! She found the perfect #3 at the hardware store for me. Her and I are "2 peas in a pod." No pun intended.

More paint by numbers. I have had this stool for 25 years and it has been orange and red. I have an obsession with numbers. Could you tell? Everytime Randy is painting he asks me "why number so and so?" Really? Are you serious? Don't be asking me that. I have no answer.

Aunt Sarah

I have my first guest blogger. Abe has been spending the summer with Aunt Sarah. Here is a recap from this week that she sent me on facebook.  I have added my thoughts in red. I only wish Aunt Sarah had been keeping me posted all summer long!

On the way to TKD on Monday,
I said, "this is going to be cole and abe's last year at Roosevelt and I am so sad"
Abe says, "i cannot wait for next summer!"
I said, "why?"
Abe says, "because I am going to get my cell phone!"
Me: I'm not sure who Abe will be calling or texting. However he still talks non stop about his own cell phone.

This morning as Abe and I are sitting on the porch watching Annie work
I said, "do you think you might paint some with Annie next summer?"
Abe says, "no, I am going to be working in our shop"
I said, "oh, what shop?"
Abe said, "the one we are getting ready to buy really soon, to redo stuff and sell it"
I said, "that will be fun"
Abe says, "you can babysit kids at our shop, Aunt Sarah"
I said, "great, can you be in charge of the lunch menu!"
Me: Everyday I say how I want to open my own shop. I have so much junk to get rid of and I keep bringing more home. Lunchtime is an issue with all those kids. I do not think that there is one thing that all of them like. You throw in the peanut allergy and celiac - I'm not sure how Aunt Sarah did it all summer.

Abe says, "Aunt Sarah, guess what? I just defeated Kung Fu Panda!"
I said, "Great!"

Moral of the story...Abe has BIG plans for next summer and you might consider his plan, because here at the Boese house it is ALL about Kung Fu Panda ; )
Me: All Abe wants is an X-Box. Thanks to both of his uncles for the encouragement. My thoughts have always been once we get the cool stuff at our house it won't be fun anymore at the Aunt and Uncles house. Right?  RIGHT??

I am wearing yellow

and other strange tidbits....

I realize that I never wear yellow. Yellow seems like it should be on a swimsuit cover up. I have a new shirt that is very summery yellow. I am wearing it today for the first time. It has made me happy today. Maybe there is truth to that "color controlling your emotions"  theory. Who can be sad when they are walking Sunshine?

I really love nutella. I have been having it every single day for lunch on a rice cake. Yummo! I noticed today that the rice cake had an allergy warning on the package. It said "may contain soy or wheat." HUH? The only ingredient is rice. I don't know whether the allergy label laws are helpful or if they make the food industry go way overboard. How am I to take that??

It is HOT!  Despite the intense heat, yesterday I was thankful for three little things that occurred at the same time in my life
  1. Ice cold airconditiong in my blazer
  2. Ice cold Route 44 Cherry Limeade Slushy
  3. "Little Red Corvette" blaring from my car stereo
We looked at a house.  Across the street. We may zigzag our way down Maple Street. But then again - it doesn't seem likely.  Neat house but not one I can see our family in. We'd love to "flip" it. I have talked to one potential investor today. I still have wonderful visions for the house! (I'm always looking - you just never know!)

My flowers are awful. The heat is just beating them up. Every May when I am planting new flowers I know that the day will come (today - actually) when I am ready to pull them all out and call it good. It always seems so far off in the future and then WHAM! It's here. Time to pull the flowers.

I am sore today from my Y Pump class. I am sore in very strange spots.

I don't diet but I have stopped eating any snack that would come out of a box. Or out of a plastic bag. We'll see how that works for me. I have high expectations. I hope I'm not disappointed.

I am looking for the perfect pair of cowboy boots. I am returning yet another pair. I can't seem to find exactly what I'm looking for. Someday I will find them. I want it to be sooner than later.

I heard about a book called Moloka'i. Nobody I know has heard of it. However, today I read a review about in on a random blog. That there was my sign. I think it is strange when that kind of stuff happens but I love it.

I accidentally dialed a wrong number (does anybody do that on purpose?) and it was awkward for several reasons. I hope they did not think I did that on purpose (does anybody do that on purpose?) because I was trying to call my brother and got two numbers mixed up. In some ways  life was so much simpler before caller ID.

it's the least wonderful time of the year

August. It's August. IT IS AUGUST!

How did that happen?

When did it happen?

I have never ever liked August. No. Not ever.

I cried when I took my girls back on the first day of school.

I do not like it. Not one bit.

Early bedtimes. Early mornings.

Annie is moving back to college on Saturday.  Even though she has been in and out all summer - she has been within arms reach. For me to hug. For me to have a cup of coffee with. For me to annoy with my annoying questions such as "Can I STILL wear this?" or "Help me find a shirt to go with these shorts....PLEASE"  She painted our camper. She cleans up the kitchen. She hangs out with Abe. I will miss her terribly. I also have a feeling this may have been her last summer home. Which really makes me weepy.

Abe will start fifth grade. That is almost more than I can even say out loud. The last year of elementary school. Didn't I just "practice" taking him to kindergarten? Didn't I just talk to the principle and his teacher. The reassured me he would be just fine.  I wasn't so sure.

What if he has to go to the bathroom?
What if he hungry?
How will he carry the lunch tray?
What if somebody teases him?
What if he needs a hug?
What if he is thirsty?
What if he is tired?
He doesn't know all of his letters....

Next year at this time (GULP) he will be heading to middle school. I am happy to announce that he does know all of his letters. Still......

August.

BOO!

A Girl Named Zippy

Here are some vintage camping pictures from when I was 11 and 12.

This is my mom (left) and her best friend Bonnie. We always camped with several families and Bonnie and her husband actually shared our tent!

Another picture of our campsite. My dad built that white cupboard for mom to haul all of her groceries in. My brother is giving my Uncle Mel bunny ears. That is my mom standing.
This is the tent where 4 adults and 2 kids slept. (we did not take Chad camping) My mom is standing and that is me posing for the camera. I noticed that we were all wearing jeans and jeans were hanging on the clothes line in the back. The picture was dated 5/31/1976.
My brother and me. Don't you love those knee socks? And the fact that I am three years older yet we are the same height??
I read lots and lots of books while camping. I LOVE my tennies!

an L on the shape of her forehead

Do you ever do something and then right after ask yourself
(because I talk to myself absolutely always)
"WHAT WAS I THINKING?"

Case In Point:

My dashboard had a warning that was in RED letters

"REAR TAILGATE OPEN"

so I said to myself
(because I talk to myself absolutely always)

"AFTER I get pulled INTO the garage I will make sure it is latched all the way."

This is the point - that had I been thinking instead of talking to myself - I would have SEEN instead of HEARD what was about to happen.

**insert the sound of metal and wooden garage here**

hmmm.....maybe - possibly - OK probably -

To be most certain

I forgot to shut the back tailgate after unloading groceries.

If I have heard my husband say it once I have it heard it thousands of times.....

They don't call those idiot lights for nothing

camping

there was fishing
there were family visitors
there were visits from friends
there was very delicious food
there were naps
there were cold showers
there were HUGE marshmallows to roast (thanks, Dad!)
there was lots of reading
there was a night terror
there was a power outage - the entire lake
there was heat exhaustion (me!)
there were lots of memories made

....and now for the rest of the story
we bought our teeny camper because it would fit behind our garage
or so we thought
we really can't keep it parked in our grass
or in our neighbors circle drive - which is where it is now
we have not budgeted for hundreds of dollars in storage a year
for our 1984 roadranger
we are really scrambling to come up with plan b

Lions and Tigers and Bears - OH MY!

We're going to the woods.
Ok. I'm kidding.
We ARE getting ready to go on a camping trip.
Which feels like the woods.....
Because I feel like I need to bring everything with me or we just won't survive.
My lists are numerous.
My lists are long.
We are camping just the four of us.
So if we forget something.....
Or realize there is something we didn't even think about....
We can't beg, borrow or steal from fellow campers.
Well, at least not people who know us.
Which makes me analyze my lists.
I don't want to forget anything.
I made a master list of what to pack.
I made a list of my menus.
I made a list for my grocery shopping trip.
I feel prepared.
What do you think I will forget?

Thursday, July 8, 2010

I may be bipolar.

I am black or white.

I am all or nothing.

I am in or out.

I am happy or sad.

I am right or wrong.

I am hot or cold.

I am not a middle of the road person.

I don't know how that would be.

I over analyze or

I don't give it a second thought.

Love me or hate me.

I blog or I don't blog.

I think I'll write about the our bookclub book.  The Girls from Ames.

A group of women (just a few years older than myself - whata ya know!) are friends from grade school and still today. There were parts I loved.  Mostly the time in which it took place. I could relate to that. Highschool in the 80's. The music was the best. Anyways, while reading the book I had a facebook friend request from my best friend from third grade. (Timely, I thought) She moved away that summer. Her life was tragic. She said I was the best friend an 8 year old girl could ever have. That meant a lot to me.  I wonder if it's easier to be an 8 year old friend than an adult friend. I'm gonna say yes. Today - I'm picky. I over analyze. I want it all and then I don't have enough of myself to put into it.  Don't go out and get the book. Or check it out from the library. It wasn't that great.

Maybe tomorrow - I'll think of something fun and exciting to write about. I dream of Jeanne or Gilligans Island. Am I Ginger or Maryann? Why can't I live in a cozy bottle?

Until then - good day!

Finding Myself

I have been 45 years old for a week and 2 days. I guess that makes me a big girl now  - right? I wonder when I will start realizing that I am mid forties? It just has not sank in yet.

Do you know when people say "Oh! THAT looks like you" and they are talking about a shirt, a dress, a china cup and saucer? So after 40 1/2 decades I am reflecting - what makes me me? For crying out loud! I'm going to be a grandma. Shouldn't I know who I AM? Midlife crisis is what I am.

Classic. Trendy. Scene. Hippie, Emo. Stuck in the 80's.....Who am I? Who do I long to be?

I have a new haircut. I have really short bangs. To the rest of the world my hair IS short. However, in my world - anything covering my ears is long. Here are my thoughts on my short bangs.

1. If I am happy and have my sense of humor on - I look like an Oompa Loompa.
2. If I am grumpy - I look like Frankenstien.

These bangs of mine are going to put me over the edge. I thought I was a bang person. I thought bangs would be "me". I may have to try two tone hair. Bleach blonde underneath and black on top. If only I knew what really "looked like me." Extensions?

Clothes..... I think I am more trendy-vintage. I like capri's with big cuffs. I like converse. I love flip flops. I like cardigans every day. I bought a big watch. I've worn it once. It is as big as my hand.  I  read that women should buy mens watches. They are big and less fussy. I own one. But I opted for a womens watch that looked like a mans. Don't ask me why. The thing is as big as my foot. Did I say that already? It is huge. I think I limp when I wear it. But I think it is "me."  I want to wear a big watch and darn it -look good while I'm wearing it. If you need to know the time - you can see it WITHOUT the assistance of bifocals. You can even tell the time across the room from me.

Life is serious stuff. People are dying. Sick.Unemployed. Eruption Cysts. People need saved. from. their sins. right now. I know all that. However -  I want a day where I can just wallow in hair and clothes. Be totally superificial and shallow. Tomorrow I will be all about the "real world" Tomorow I will shape up. Pinky promise.

Today, I am going to be 13 all. day. long.

I'd love company. Won't you join me?

45

I LOVE traditions. I think that is why I love birthdays. It is the perfect day to make a tradition that you can anticipate and look forward to. Here is a look back at my most memorable birthdays.

My earliest birthday that I remember is the my 6th birthday. I was in kindergarten. Mom invited all the girls in my class (all six!). It was afterschool and a beautiful sunny afternoon. My parents gave me my first Barbie. Several girls gave me Barbie clothes and accessories. We were in the back yard and in my room.

I remember my Uncle Paul stopping by. This was very unusual because he lived in Kansas City and was a trucker. I never remember him coming by any other time but on that birthday and he brought me one of his Tiger Health bars that he always ate (and I loved, too)

May is the best birthday month for many reasons. One of them is it is right time for a bike.

My first bike was a used blue Schwinn. I think I must have been in first grade. My neighbor friend had one, too and I was soooo jealous of hers. She had an S on her seat (I did not) and I thought that one should be mine since it was my letter.

In fourth grade I got a brand spanking new baby blue banana seat bike. That thing was awesome! I was so proud of it.

In middle school I got an orange 10 speed. My favorite color was orange and I could not have been happier. The handlebars were wrapped with black electrical tape (this bike was used, too) Back in the day – our basic mode of transportation was a bike. So these were not only fun but very practical gifts.

My mom went through a cake decorating phase. My favorite cake was a Ziggy cake. I loved Ziggy and that cake was super cute! That was my 14th birthday.

Since my birthday is so close to All Schools Day that turned into my official birthday party. We would meet up with my friends at the parade and then go for a picnic lunch and then the carnival and then I would have a sleepover. Those were some wild and crazy slumber parties. I don’t know how my parents ever survived those!

I don’t like surprises. It takes a lot to surprise me but I have enjoyed my share of surprise parties. On my 13th birthday I had a babysitting job for the regular kids I babysat for all the time. I rarely (maybe never?) turned down a babysitting job so to baby-sit on my birthday wouldn’t have been weird. When the mom brought me home imagine my SURPRISE when I walked in the front door and all of my friends were standing there! That was fun. There was also a surprise birthday on my 16th birthday. Randy surprised me with an entire full-blown birthday BBQ after we were married. All of our friends were there in our teeny back yard. On my 35th birthday I was 9 months pregnant with Abe. I did NOT want a party of any kind. We had a program at school and when we came home Randy had everybody there with cake and ice cream. It was fun even though I was grumpy and threw a fit. On my 40th birthday all the girls in my family were going to go out and eat. When we stopped by to pick up my mom I was so surprised to see all my friends there and my favorite dinner of porkchops and potatoes and gravy ready for me. Great times!
For years we would all load up and go eat Brookville chicken on my birthday. My dinner was always free and it was a tradition for years. It is no more because I can’t eat there. This makes me very sad. But I have lots of great memories of those dinners.

The thing about May birthdays is the weather is absolutely perfect or we are in a tornado warning. There have been plenty of birthdays where we have huddled in the basement with the sirens blowing. Our Brookeville trip had to be cancelled a time or two as well.

The weather is perfect today and I am going to have a great birthday!

OH Baby!

Jamie recently revisited her very first blog entry. That got me to thinking about mine.

Do you remember this?

Wow! A lot has changed since then.

Mamma to be is pretty stinkin' adorable!

And I'm going to be a grandma!!!

Little Miss Sunshine

I knew it would be better today. The wind has died down. The sun is shining. AND tonight is book club! Which means my home will be filled with friends, laughter and books and snacks and more laughing and fun times. I loved a Girl Named Zippy.

What is ailing me isn't terminal. However, I feel like the entire town has cancer. My boss is spending what could be one of the last days with his dad. They called in hospice and arranged for him to come home today. They have been getting the house ready for his return. A sad turn of events, however. He is not healthy enough to leave the hospital. I feel awful for him. His mom is still recovering from her own cancer surgery.

So I am looking at Randy's job as a blessing. And I'm looking at the choices my big kids make as their own even when it indirectly involves me. And I'm moving on. Forward from tears. Forward from sadness.

Because today I woke up.  I worked out. I ate breakfast with my favorite 9 year old. I kissed my husband good-bye. I drove to work in the sunshine (in a very dirty vehicle). I'm having company tonight. Tomorrow is Friday and I have the day off.

I'm not sure what the future holds but today I am good.

For those of you who checked in on me - Thank you. I appreciate your love, concern and friendship.

Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

I haven't had a day where I have felt like this in a long time. A day that should have been spent at home under the covers. Not in the outside world. Because all ability to cope is practically gone. All reasoning has left my brain.

A day where I walk into my office and cry. A day where I am mad at nobody but feel like I'm mad at everybody. A day where I'm frustrated with nothing in particular but frustrated with every single thing.

It's been a day where my expectations and reality have crashed together.  They coexist in a parallel universe until something or someone crosses the line. Then BOOM! I am where I am today. Very grumpy.

This week decisions have been decided. Choices have been chosen.  I may not like them. They may or may not involve me directly but I feel burdened in my heart. A heart can be deceiving.

And I cry easily. I always have. I hate that about myself. I will grow old hating it.

On the bright side - my house is a wreck. I'm having people over tomorrow so I get to go home and crank up my ipod. Light my candles. Drink wine. Clean. Do laundry. Do useful things. Utilitarian things. Unemotional chores.

And the sun is supposed to shine tomorrow. Amen!

April Fools

I have been going to an early morning exercise class. It is a ridiculous time for anybody in their right mind to get up. I have motivation, though.  My sister-in-law makes me go. She even picks me up. When she picks me up she always has a cup of coffee with her. she has eaten breakfast and done a load of laundry. This cracks me up because I crawl out of bed, brush my teeth, get dressed, run downstairs and she is waiting. So when I crawl into her van I've been up....oh...I'm guessing a total of about 2.5 minutes.

This morning - no exception. Jump up - brush teeth - while getting dressed thinking of calling her and cancelling. I feel a cough coming on. Maybe a sore throat. Who am I kidding? I just want to go back to sleep.

At about 6 a.m she leans over and says "Did you know that your shorts are on backwards."

"No. They aren't." I replied. Good grief! Can't she see I'm struggling with my "heavy" weight during my plie squats?

Her - "Since when is the Nike swish printed on the back?"

After 200 something plie squats I act like I'm going to tie my string tighter around my waste and wouldn't you know it. No drawstring. Just a tag. My shorts were absolutely on backwards. No joke.

For the next 30 minutes I tried to decide if in between 500 lunges I should run to the bathroom and switch them around. Since it is April 1st I am kind of scared to leave my stuff unattended.

FYI -I actually did that on purpose. Put my shorts on backwards. Just to see who would notice. The prize goes to Sarah. Sarah with the Eagle Eye.

On a side note - There was an unscientific poll during class. How many of us had spouses who worked out. Out of 14 people only 3 people had spouses who worked at, too. I wonder why that is?

Dust off that library card

Did I tell you I'm in a book club? I love it. I love reading. I love the books. I love the girls in the book club. I love having somebody CHOOSE what I'm reading. Here is a run down of what I've read since January.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. There is so much about the German occupation I did not know. This book is written entirely in letters. Very fun but kinda hard to follow. I found myself having to go back and see who wrote the letter and who it was written to. I would highly recommend to anybody.

The Knitting Circle. A very easy book to read. This was a sad story but very good. The charaters all had lots of drama and it kept me reading. I started this book on the way to Kansas City and finished it on the way back home.

The Help.  This book was terrific! It is about a group of 23 year old woman and their hired help in Mississippi in the 60's. I think everybody should read this book. Eye opening. The cast of characters is amazing. If you have not read this - read it now.

A Girl Named Zippy. Word on the street is some of the book club members (I think we need to name our book club - don't you?) are having troubles with this book. I LOVED it. It took me a long time to read but I enjoyed it. Each chapter is a funny little short story about a girl growing up in Moorehead, Indiana. She just happened to be born in 1965 (same as yours truly). I would recommend it, however, the librarian told me she had trouble getting into it and actually never read it. Do you trust me or my local librarian? If you want to laugh (and possibly wet your pants) check it out.

Cane River. I'm just getting started on this. I was thrilled to get the hard cover off of Amazon. It looks like another good (albeit serious) good read. I'll let you know.

Go grab one of these and a cup of tea and enjoy the beautiful spring weather with a great book!

I Dunno

  • Why do I struggle with choosing a color of lipgloss? Dolly or Gabby or Ginger? It IS ONLY LIPGLOSS for heavens sake. I'll take one of each!
  • Why do I change my mind so often? Should I have gotten Sugar?
  • Why did Abe bring home an entire fist full of inidvidually wrapped "mint flavored" toothpicks from Pizza Hut.
  • Why am I not rich?
  • Why am I not poor?
  • Will I ever be able to spell?
  • Do I say what I believe and believe what I say?
  • Why do I have such a strong desire to wear RED shoes?
  • Why do I feel the need to have a reply to all those goofy facebook statuses? I don't really do it - but in my head I do. I shout them at the computer, actually.
  • How did I survive raising two daughters? Did I really survive? :-)
  • How will we survive the middleschool years with our little guy? What about highschool?
  • What do I wear during this transition weather? Capris? Flip flops? Nothing makes sense.
  • I thought it was global warming. Why is this the longest - coldest winter ever?
  • I have my yearly mammogram next week. Will it be clear?
  • Will we be able to retire someday?
  • When will I learn that I can't eat out without suffering?
  • Why does it take me so long to get started reading a new book? I love to read. I just need a jump start.
  • Will I ever need a passport?
  • Will I ever enjoy getting up for 5:45 AM exercise class?
  • Why can't I loose 10 pounds? People loose hundreds. I'm just asking for 10.
  • Will I ever see my Chicago family for more than a few days a year?
  • I was so excited to feed all the birds in our yard. Why am I frustrated that there is bird poop EVERYWHERE?
  • Why do vacations go by so fast?
  • Why do I miscommunicate my feelings so often?
  • Why don't you know what you should have done differently until AFTER your kids are grown?
  • What makes a family close and another one not?
  • Will I ever have a swimming pool?
  • What's for dinner?
  • Where is my Mickey Mouse watch?
  • Do I tell the people I love how I feel often enough?

wonderful weekend

Do you know how many days I sail through without ever giving my activities a second thought? Let me tell you. Plenty! When I was thinking back on this weekend I am appreciating it for the second time. I loved living it the first time I am so thankful for it sitting here remembering.

Thursday after work I got a call from Annie. She was HAPPY and excited.  She was accepted into the Graphic Design program at school. I knew she would make it! I think one of the most rewarding parts of being a mother is watching your child see their wishes and dreams come true. What a wonderful way to start my weekend. Lots to be thanksful for Thursday.

Friday morning was spent in my happy place. I love the coffee shop and I enjoy being there with people I love. Friday evening was a movie night with friends. What a fabulous Friday.

Saturday I spent the day from sun up till sun down with my husband. We don't get to do that very often. We would have welcomed having our little tag-along with us but he chose Grandma & Papaw's house instead. I don't blame him. Papaw's buttered macaroni's were always one of my favorite foods, too.

Sunday we went to church. We had a guest speaker who was one of my favorite pastors from a long time ago. The perfect ending to a great weekend was going over to friends house for dinner and dessert.

Not every weekend is so enjoyable. I didn't want this one to slip away without appreciating it.

a lot of housekeeping and I got me no maid

....so I heard through the grapevine you miss me. Is that right? Who knew! My poor blog has been left in the dust while I tended to life. Ugh! Life. Facebook, skyping, e-mailing, texting....and all that jazz.

I will try and give you the readers digest version and then keep up from here on out. If I had a dime for everytime I said that - well - I'd be rich!

My baby girl turned 20. TWENTY! That has thrown me for a loop  We went and spent her birthday day with her. If I could do it all over again- I'd stay for evening festivities as well.

YMCA- I have been working hard to get into some sort of middle-aged shape. Phew. It's hard work and the hours are crazy- middle of the night (5:45 a.m.) and supper time (6:15 p.m.) I usually dread going but am oh-so-happy when I've made it through yet another workout class. I hate failure. Don't accept it much. So I'll keep on at it. Ick. My favorite class is Yoga. I love IT! We lay on our backs for the last 15 minutes. In the dark. Just lay there. Some people fall asleep. (Ok - one lady did one time) I would go every single day if I could.

I helped Annie set up her art booth. She is applying for the graphic design program at K-State and basically, I am her cheerleader. I go back and forth being stressed for her and feeling totally confident that she will be accepted. 16 spots. Over 32 applying. AND last semester they only accepted 9. They don't have to fill all 16 chairs. I remember the disappointment of failed cheerleader tryouts (me and Abby) and failed Arts Council Choir tryouts (Annie) and I can hardly take the rejection. I know God has a plan for her. A very good plan, too. She will be fine. Today, I am feeling very confident. She is an amazing artist. Lots of vision and talent.

Our neighbors moved. People are always on the move. Nobody can just stay put. Have you noticed that? They ARE just on the other end of town. Still - the dynamics of the block have changed a little. I'm sure the new neighbors are a good fit. Change and me - we don't go hand in hand.

We had our 26th (gasp!) wedding anniversary. That is so crazy for me to wrap my mind around. Just as bad as my baby girl being 20! When word on the street was we wouldn't make it a year (don't ask) I knew I would be married till I die. Now I'm praying for the end of time (sorry- I could not resist!) Don't you remember that Meatloaf song? It seems like we get used to one stage of life and then suddently we're catapulted into the next.

I am in my very first ever bookclub! (However, this is the THIRD book in this bookclub) I've been reading and reading. This month the book was very good-as they all have been. I would recommend it to any reader. The Help. The thing with me and books is I kinda get them mixed up with my real life. I start thinking and talking like them. AND I start to try and pick out people I thinks is like them, too. Law! I's gonna dedicate an in tire post to that bookclub. Pinky Swear!

Speaking of catapulted - I been shopping...for diapers, sleepers. All things baby. I'm going to be me a Granny ma. Law! Goodness-sakes-alive. I gots to get me some of those knee high panythose and some SAS comfy shoes. Me gottsa baby to run after! We are all waiting for September to come. I have decided that blessings come when you least expect them. We would love to see Abby and Jeff and Stella move closer to home (my home not theirs) before the special delivery but I know however we grandparent, near or far - we will find lots of joy in our growing family. (Don't tell Abby- I'm trying to stay out of the baby naming process but I'm leaning towards suggesting Mae Mobley if it's a girl)

I can't top that news so I'm outta here.

Oh Happy Day!

I stumbled upon a really great site. If you are currently happy. Have been happy at some point in your life. Or would like to be happy right now - check it out. I LOVE IT! I especially love the one minute videos (I cried while watching The days are long, the years are short)

Let me know what you think.

pizza pizza

I just celebrated two years of gluten free eating! I can say, without a doubt, those two years have flown by. I have had to learn to navigate eating at restaurants and in other people’s homes while staying true to my health. That isn't always so easy. Mostly - we stay home and eat. Which is much better anyway. Especially, when I can get Randy to cook. He made us dinner on Valentines Day and I must say - delish. Yummo. Two thumbs up. He's a keeper for sure.
We ate by candlelight and had Peanutbutter cake with chocolate frosting for desert (my treat to my boys). I can't think of a better way to spend Valentine's Day than with my two favorite guys.

ordinary day

I'm not really into watching a bunch of You Tube videos. But this is really good. So, if you are a mommy with 1 (or 12) kids still at home or an empty nester - watch this. It's true. I promise. Take my word.

Uncle Billy

Abe's 4th grade class has a General Store. The kids have partners and they earn money doing a variety of things. One of the ways is to bring things to sell at the General Store. They can also earn money during class time. Then the General Store opens for business. The partners get to purchase things with all of the money they have earned. Stuff like cookies, folded up pieces of paper, gum wrappers, X Box 360 (just kidding), etc. You know the saying, "One boy's junk is another boy's treasure."

Abe came home from school yesterday frantically searching for something. I was more than willing to help him search because he was visibly upset. He was looking for his wallet. Which is actually Randy's old wallet. The problem is that Randy gets a new wallet every single Christmas (tradition) and Abe is a hoarder. And he has every wallet for the past 8 years - since he became a hoarder at the age of one. Hmmm...we could not find DAD'S OLD BILLFOLD FROM A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO THAT IS BROWN AND REALLY ABOUT READY TO FALL APART. You know the one - the one that is filled with ATLEAST $970 of General Store money. He had it Monday for sure. No wait - it was Friday. Nope. Monday for sure. Maybe Tuesday.

Oh buddy. This is a hard lesson. Tomorrow will come and go and by the way - do you know what you purchased at the last General Store? Where is that little folded up piece of paper with a pencil drawing of a dragon? How 'bout I draw you something and fold it up cool AND I can get you a cookie from downtown. Really - it. is. ok.

Except.....The $970 is the partner’s money, too. One of them had already been calling planning on what they were taking to sell to make MORE money. The "partners" had yet to hear that Georges' Uncle Billy* had lost all their money.

What's a mom to do? Life lesson here before me. Dropped in my lap.
  • How would HE react had one of his partners lost the money?
  • What could he do to make it better?
  • What were his consequences going to be?
  • What could he differet next time?
  • Money doesn't grow on trees!!!
Then I e-mailed the teacher. I wanted to give him a heads up. Who knew how this would be playing out at 8:05 a.m.? Would he be lynched? Would the boys think this was the next Ponzi scheme? Didn't they just see a brand new Yacht behind our house? Hadn't Abe just wore a brand new Under Armour shirt the day before? Shoud I go to school with him?

Life Lesson #970. General Store is all about dealing with money. Making money. Managing money. School of hard knocks just dealt my favorite little guy a big blow. The money is gone**. They will have to earn it back. He will have to deal with his partners all by himself.
This morning I kissed and hugged him and told him it would be OK. He had an extra big box of Little Debbies*** to sell in the store and hopefully - they could recoup some of the lost dough.

Who knew we had our own little Wall Street right here.

*Uncle Billy is George Bailey's uncle in It's a Wonderful Life. He misplaces their $2000 bank deposit which is what puts George in his despair.

**Annie's solution was to copy more money. Who would ever know? (Should I worry about this one?)

***The Little Debbie's were government mom's bailout.

****Last night at Dillons Abe was in charge of our canvas grocery bag. At check out he did not have it. We had to back track and finally found it laying with the Bananas. Need I say more????

no pain no gain. Right?

Back in the day we were Y Rats. When Abby was little we spent most mornings at the YMCA. We did parent-tot swim and she did tumble time. The day care was structured like a "preschool" and we knew all the kids and all their mothers. When Annie came along - she went right along with us. I did a race-walking class and all the other women took turns carrying her around the gym. Then we would head downstairs to lift weights and she would watch happily from her carseat. I think I had her in the pool when she as just a couple of months old. We would head back in the afternoon, too. I would stick Abby in childcare and Annie and I would head down the basement to walk on the treadmill. (Me - not her. She slept in her carseat) I was in great shape. Eventually, I took a part time job and I stopped going to the Y. I did have a friend who I walked with every day but my social life at the Y ended.

When Abe was younger we started going to the Y in the mornings. That lasted until I increased my hours at work and was working in the morning. I tried the early (very. very. early) classes but just couldn't keep getting up in the middle of the night to exercise.

Even though my weight has been the same for 23 years and my BMI is well within normal range, I am currently struggling with body image and decided to try the exercise circuit again. If I could just stop jiggling and wiggling I think my self-esteem would increase. So in the last two days I have done a core class. A Zumba dance class and Yoga.

Today I feel like I was in a bar room brawl. And I lost. My stomach muscle hurts. They hurt real bad.

Happy 5th Birthday!

We have been in our house for five years! Time does fly when you are having fun. I remember that moving weekend like it was yesterday. It was a really big move - right across the street.  We were in the middle of a major remodel of the house 2 weeks before and were not even close to finished with projects when we had to move in. Here are some of my fondest memories from five years ago.

  • The week of our move our family got the stomach flu.
  • My last living grandparent died.
  • My parents had too much going on to help me. I'm a big girl. I managed but I still missed them!
  • I had awful buyers remorse.
  • I thought the best way to get things finished was to work all night.
  • And work all day.
  • Loading up groceries in Abe's wagon and hauling it across the street.
  • Trying to order pizza at 1:00 a.m.
  • Painting - lots and lots of paint.
  • Days and days with very little sleep makes you see things not so clearly.
  • Boxes and boxes stacked on my front porch for days.
  • Which couch should I keep? Which couch should I sell?
  • I stopped doing laundry completely because I HATED going down into the basement.
  • We did not have a microwave.  I realized how much I used a microwave when we didn't have one.
  • Some wonderful people from church brought us in homecooked meals. I was so thankful for this.
  • My wonderful friends who showed up to help. And put things away. And organize all my junk. And bring me hot coffee. And homemade cookies. (I was not gluten free - Thank Goodness!) and help me keep things in perspective.
Yep - the friends are who got me through that weekend. They were the silver lining in those dark days.

And now five years later I am still thankful for my friends and family and all of the support they gave my family. And I love my home!

facebook

These days everybody has a facebook. I LOVE facebook, myself. I love chatting with my friends who (whom?) I never see in “real life.” I enjoy seeing what everybody is up to. I know who is sick or who is having a good hair day. I have started noticing patterns with certain friends. Disclaimer: All identities have remained private to protect their privacy. I do apologize in advance if these are YOUR status updates. If it makes you feel better some are mine!

THE STALKER - This friend never has a status update and they never comment on other friends’ status. Maybe they don’t even get on facebook. They are so missing out!
For obvious reasons – there is no example

THE QUOTER – This friend has a different quote every day.
We are so often caught up in our destination that we forget to appreciate the journey!

THE LYRIC QUOTER-This friend always posts lyrics to songs. I am always thankful when somebody comments they like that song because I don’t know they are lyrics and I get them confused for The Cryptic or just think they are weird (see below)
God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy

THE EVANGELICAL – This friend has prayer requests and/or scripture.
For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11

THE POLITICAL - This friend has very strong political opinons.
Way to go Scott Brown! Make those Dem's squirm!!

HELP! I've fallen and I can't get up.

This morning (in the umpteenth day of fog) I went to get the mail. And then I went to the coffee shop. And then I pulled into work. I opened my car door. I grabbed my NEW Vera Bradley. I grabbed my full steaming cup of Java. I stepped out. I went down. I went down really fast. I'm not sure I have ever fallen on the ice. If I have - it was in another life. I don't remember it. I fell fast. I fell hard. My back hit my running board. My back hit my running board really hard. Had my head hit instead of my back I think I would have been in a coma. Or worse - dead. Maybe. Maybe not. I think I would have been in a coma, for sure. Coffee went all over my coat. Coffee totally missed my NEW Vera Bradley. My do-not-wash-do-not-dry-clean Vera Bradley. I am so thankful for that because I don't really like my things to be dirty. sratched. dented. or full of coffee stains. My black coat will be OK.

Here is the rest of the story.....

My boss saw me pull up and since he almost fell earlier, he was going to warn me that the SIDEWALK was slick and to be careful. Guess who pulled me off the ice? Yep. My boss. I think he was horrified that he saw all of that happen. Me, too.

It may sound like greek - but I love it.

Abby has a new blog. I think she will update (or so she says) often and it is very educational and enjoyable.

Check it out here.

to whom it may concern:

Merry Christmas!

I cannot believe that it is already two thousand and ten. Twenty Ten? I guess there is a great debate as to the proper way to say 2010. I guess time will tell!

In May we had a Griswold family vacation of sorts. We rented a van with my parents and headed to Chicago. Abby graduated from North Park University with a degree in Theology and Biblical Studies. She loves school so very much that she is working on her masters. Let me translate that for you. It means lots and lots and then a little more and then a lot more reading. Every time I call her she is READING! We are so proud of our little over achiever! We hope her eyesight makes it through Seminary. Jeff is a genius. We knew he was smart to want to join our family! He has been promoted at the Apple store to a genius status. We hear that is a pretty big deal in the Mac world. Not that I would know first hand because I don't own one but I take their word for it. We are proud to have him in our family. Stella is 7 going on 17. She is precious! Abe and Stella provide us with so much entertainment when they are together. They are showing a natural ability to recreate SNL skits. Stella has her own e-mail account and it makes my heart leap for joy when I have a special message just from her in my inbox. We can't wait until they can move closer to home and we can see them more! Like every day. I want to see Stella every.single.day. And maybe Jeff. Ok, and Abby, too.

Annie is a sophomore at K-State. She is our talented art major. She is always hard at work in the studio. I can call her at 2:00 pm - in the studio. Sometimes I will call at midnight - yep, in the studio. Over Christmas break she brought home lots of ceramic masterpieces to prove to me that she was not lying. She was really in. the. art. studio. She had to call us to break the awful news that she may not pass physics. In the final hour (week) she hired a tutor and called us rejoicing. She got an A! After all the stress she puts us through - she makes us proud. She is talented AND smart! And beautiful.

Abe continues to be...well....Abe. We can hardly believe that he is in the fourth grade. 4th GRADE? We better come up with more moolah for his college fund. He will be college bound before we can say two thousand and eighteen. Or Twenty Eighteen. Whatever! Anyways, he earned his second degree black belt and I continue to be in awe when I watch him kickin' it at Tae Kwan Do. He is a boy after my own heart (and Abby's)- he loves to read. He collects comic books and baseball cards and anything else he happens to have more than 2 of. This summer will be a new experience for our family. He is on a traveling baseball team. I can't wait to see how cute he is in the uniform! He is a perfect combination of both of his sisters. We adore him.

Randy had a little bit of a scare. A couple of weeks before Christmas he was told by his employer that as of January 1,2010 his job would be eliminated. We prayed and prayed and had lots of prayer warriors praying as well. We were trying to be OK with the fact that he would be self employed. You know that stuff about having faith? Where is that when you really need it? (I'm speaking only of myself here. Randy has the faith of North America, South America, Antarctica...) Anyways, in the final hour - they offered him another position. A Christmas Miracle is what we call that! Gotta have Faith! I have got to be better about that in 2010.

In January my work hours were cut back to four days because of the economy and lack of work. That turned out to be such a blessing I was not expecting. I NEVER want to go back to five days. I feel like my entire attitude turned around when I was able to have one day, every week, for myself. I also took a couple of college classes and somehow (a miracle) managed an A in both of them. I am so glad that is all over with! And Annie says I would never make it in college! ha!

We look forward to spending the holidays with family and friends. To reflect and remember that one night so long ago when God sent His only Son for whoever believes in Him to have everlasting life. And Peace. And Joy. All because of a little baby boy. Happy Birthday Baby Jesus!

May you experience the Blessings of Our Lord and Savior this Christmas Season and all the year through.

out with the old and in the with the new

The talk of New Years resolutions came up recently. I'm not much into those. Why? They are a sure set up for failure. A person such as myself, with perfectionist tendancies tend to go a tad overboard with things like resolutions. Suddenly it is January 16th and I haven't done one situp and I've eaten 16 boxes of hot tamales (one each day) and I still let people bug the crap out of me - I am still stuck in the laws of Moses. It's just too much for this old heart of my mine to handle. I am totally worthless and my life is totally worthless. I might as well just throw in the towel.

See? I am in the pit of depression and it's not even January 20. My solution to all this dispair? I just don't make any resolutions. That doesn't mean that I don't think about what I would if I was the type of person who would make a list if I could. I would love to. Heaven knows there is plenty for me to improve one. Ask my kids. I should just let them come up with mine. BUT I DO like to give thought about my list and what I would put on it. If I made one. But I don't. And I won't. Because I would fail and I would rather think of myself as a winner. I. am. a. winner.

Take this blog, for instance. I have practically been ignoring it. I could put "be a better blogger" on the top of my 2010 list. BUT my spell checker stopped working and I'm not so hot of a speller and it totally stressed me out. I dont want too look stoopid buy speling theengs oll rong sew eye jussed kinda gaive up on bloging four a whyle.

I really do have lots to say. Lots of thoughts running through my head.

I did not do a Christmas letter this year so I think I will blog my Christmas letter. I'll give that whirl and see if it can jump start my 2010.

Hey! I'll see YOU around the blogosphere.
