Can you hear me NOW?

This is nothing new for me. I have been wondering a lot about prayer these past few months. Do I pray enough? Do I pray too much? Do I pray right? Do I have enough faith? How much faith is enough? Are my prayers too greedy? What if I forget something - will He still know? (of course!) I do believe in prayer. I do believe in unanswered prayer, as well. The thing is - we talk A LOT about this at work. We know that our God is a God of details but good grief! It does seem silly that we can pray for lost car keys and they are found but yet we pray for a marriage and it crumbles. See where I'm going? If God helps me find my cell phone why on earth can't he make me a couple of inches taller? Just sayin'.

So, last night, my friend Rhonda tells us that she has heard the song Unanswered Prayers (Garth Brooks) at least 5 times on the radio in the last week. And she doesn't even listen to country music that much. I said that was really strange because I bet I hadn't heard that song in years! I then asked the girls if they thought that God would really put that song on the radio just for Rhonda to hear? Yes - they both thought so. Let me make it perfectly clear that I am not doubting that. I think that, too. (until I start over analyzing God- can I even do that?)
When I was praying last night I thanked God for unanswered prayer. I am thankful that He knows what is better for me than myself. Because most of the times I think I have the best plan and mostly - my plan isn't so hot.

8:25 this morning and I'm heading to work. My daily routine is to hit scan and find some rockin' 80's music to get my day up and running. The first song it stops at....

UNANSWERED PRAYER!

for what it's worth

My friend, Jamie, introduced me to Bare Escentual makeup (which I love) before Christmas. I feel like I've been way to stingy with it and was actually scaring myself when I would walk by a mirror. I looked awful. So yesterday I used twice as much makeup as I usually do. Surprisingly, I received two comments.

Jamie: Your makeup looks good. It looks just like when the lady at the store did it. Did you do something different?

and later on the afternoon...

Annie: Have you switched back to your liquid makeup because it looks like you have way too much on-just like when you used to use that liquid foundation. It is not blended in and it really doesn't look so good.

After supper last night Abe wanted to go to Dillon's and buy Mario Cards. At least, that is what I thought he said. I told him we would go today. He showered and got all ready for bed and he came downstairs and asked if we could please run really quick to Wal Mart so he could buy Mario Kart! I guess I misunderstood him the first time. Because I felt like actually being a fun mom I said sure! It was after 8:00 (his bedtime is 8:00) and I made him promise when we came home he would go right to bed. He agreed. So he ran up and grabbed all of his twenty dollar bills and I took the little guy so he could spend his money on a new game for his wii.

Sometimes it is nice to throw all caution to the wind and forget bedtimes and saving money. He did inform me, however, that he has a bunch of "ones" left so he is not totally broke!

so much

I have a sore throat. I can hardly swallow. I just feel all out of sorts. And I feel as if my attitude is taking a nosedive.

It seems we have much on our plate over here. Much needs to be done. Much is asked. Much is expected. Much needs to be given. I'm not sure where that much much is supposed to come from.

I wish it was easier. Like if there was a store that sold much or a class that taught me about much. Or if there was a greenhouse that sold much and I could just plant some in my backyard. But there is not and the clock, well the clock it is-a-tickin' and I have much to figure out and I need to do it without loosing my ever-lovin' mind...

...'cause now would not really be a good time for me to loose that.

Administrative Professionals Day

For years my bosses would give me such a hard time. They said I was "so much more than a secretary" that they should be exempt from giving me a gift (but then they would shower me with wonderful things) Now that it is all inclusive they say thanks and still give me something totally awesome. I accept their appreciation with open arms. Especially because this year the gift includes one of my favorite things. A Wood Wick candle!

To all you women working your tales off today - Happy Administration Professionals Day! I hope somebody makes you feel loved and appreciated, too.

don't tell.....

A few months ago I picked up Guitar Hero for the wii and hid it. It is for Abe's birthday coming up next month.

Last night, long after Abe was tucked in and asleep, we opened it up and played. Annie said it reminded her of an episode of Growing Pains when Chrissy has a dream after she goes to bed all the fun begins. I guess there may be some truth to that!

There was a little Fog Hat and a little Pat Benatar in our basement.

I only hope we can hold off a few more weeks to give little buddy HIS birthday gift.

For now we will continue our late night garage basement band.

Lead Foot

We left home around 7:30 a.m. Saturday to submit Annie's art for a college scholarship. She was nervous about driving but I told her it would be great experience since she will probably be doing the 2 hour drive by herself before long.

As we're discussing where we should turn and what lane we should be in we see lights behind us. She asked me if those lights were for her. I was very optimistic and reassured her I was sure they were not. She said she was going to pull into the gas station on the corner and see. He followed us. He got out and walked to Annie's window. He introduced himself (he was very nice. and very young.) and told her that he clocked her doing 67 MPH in a 45. We were both in disbelief. I said that it was her first time to drive there and we were heading up for a college open house and we weren't paying attention to the speed limit, which we should have been, because we were so concerned over where we were going. While we waited I told her I doubted she would get a warning since it was so much over the speed limit. She was amazingly calm but said her day was ruined.

He came back and was still really nice. I was trying to figure in my head how much the ticket would actually cost and then how much her car insurance would go up when he leaned down into her window.

He said that since the speed limit was actually posted at 55 before the 45 he had written her up as going 67 in a 55. Because of that he was able to give her a written warning. Then he proceeded to tell us that ticket would have cost her $174 and he wanted to make sure that we enjoyed our day at the college!

And we had a very fun day!

Senior Art Booth

Cuttin' them there apron strings!

We are in the middle of art mania. This weekend we will be taking Annie's art portfolio to college and submit her work for scholarships. But first, Annie has a senior booth at a community art show where local scholarships will be awarded.

She is in charge of setting up a booth displaying her best pieces. My job is to "help" her with this project. I am her assistant. My duties were to round up old benches, an old chair, an old suitcase, hooks, duct tape, and yards and yards of fabric. Before this little adventure all started she gave me the one and only job requirement. She told me I was not to open my mouth and give an opinion unless she asked for it. This is what she said to me, "You have lots of opinions and I don't want to hear them." Smart girl. She is right. I am a typical first born.

Later in the evening I really got caught up in the moment and commented how cool our booth was going to be. Oops.

She let me have it, "It is not OUR booth. It is MY booth."

She was right. It is just that since I gave birth to my kids I have been an all inclusive kind of mom. Every single thing that those girls did my heart was all wrapped up in. It is still strange to think that they are adults and my parenting has shifted to try and remain silent and let them be themselves.

No matter what the judges decide (which is all about personal taste, anyway) she will forever be first in my eyes.

Birth order

I love these things! Abby and I are both text book first born. According to this list, Annie acts like a typical last born. Only thing is that she is technically a middle. As of now Abe could be first born or only. Time will tell. Who are you?

FIRST-BORNS
Positives: They are natural leaders and often high achievers. The majority of politicians, spokespersons and managing directors are first-borns. They frequently live with a sense of entitlement and even superiority. They often come in two flavors: compliant nurturers/caregivers or aggressive movers and shakers. Both are in control; they just use different methods. As a rule, first-borns are picky, precise people - they pay attention to detail - tend to be punctual, organized, and competent. They want to see things done right the first time. They don't like surprises.

Negatives: They are often moody and occasionally lack sensitivity. They can be intimidating, particularly by pushing people too hard or refusing to take no for an answer. Sometimes they can be a bit 'know-it-all', and often they are poor at delegating - largely because they don't trust other people as much as they trust themselves. They also tend to be bossy, perfectionists and overly-conscientious.

MIDDLE-BORNS
Positives: The classic middle-born is very relational, tends to be a people-pleaser and usually hates confrontation. Their basic need is to keep life smooth and their motto might be 'peace at any price'. They are usually very calm, will roll with the punches and are amiable, down-to-earth and great listeners. They are skilled at seeing both sides of a problem and eager to make everybody happy. That makes them good mediators and negotiators.

Negatives: They tend to be less driven than first-borns, but are much more eager to be liked - or at least be happy with them. They have a difficult time setting boundaries. They can drift into becoming 'co-dependent' as they try to please everybody. They are not good at making decisions that will offend others. They also tend to blame themselves when others fail.

LAST-BORNS
Positives: Last-borns are the world's cheerleaders. You have strong people skills and love to entertain and talk to others. You make friends easily and immediately make others feel at home. You're an extrovert, energized by the presence of other people and you're probably not afraid to take risks.

Negatives: Last-borns tend to get bored quickly. They have a strong fear of rejection and a short attention span. When the fun stops, they've had enough and want to check out. To some extent they're self-centered. They may harbor unrealistic expectations of finding a relationship that is always fun - and of course, such relationships simply do not last.

ONLY-BORNS
Positives: Only-borns are the mega-movers of the world. They are task-orientated; tend to be extremely well organized, highly conscientious and dependable. They are keen on facts, ideas and details and feel extremely comfortable with responsibility.

Negatives: The negative characteristics of only-borns can be tough to handle. They are often unforgiving, very demanding, hate to admit they're wrong and usually don't accept criticism well. To others, they seem very sensitive and indeed, their feelings are easily hurt.

I miss you, too, buddy.

Because there is no school today, Abe is spending the day with his Grandpa.

I called to say "hi" and see how his morning was going. I wanted to know if he had started any fires or gotten lost down by the creek or shot his eye out with the Red Rider BB gun.

When he got on the phone this is what he said:

"I DON'T WANT YOU TO COME AND PICK ME UP. DO NOT COME AND PICK ME UP!"

The grass really IS greener on the other side of the street

We have completely stopped eating out. No fast food. No take out pizza. No Sunday dinner out. The reason behind this is that there is really nothing for ME to eat when we go out. Surprisingly, I haven't even missed it. Equally as surprising is that I don't have any extra money.

I ran to the grocery store last night and spent $20. All of my purchases easily fit inside one grocery bag. What the heck?

And then there is the gas I put in to drive to the grocery store - another forty bucks every 4 to 5 days.

I saw my neighbor out mowing his yard this weekend. His yard is beautiful. Ours is full of dirt with patches of clover here and there. I asked him the secret of his green lawn and he laughed and said "lots of money."

Because I'm raising humans and not cows I will probably have to let go of my dream for thick green grass and stick to spending my money on things like food and milk and fuel so I can get to the store to buy more food and milk.

not your mamma's classic rock

Him: Mom, you should listen to my i-pod sometime. There are a lot of songs that you would hear at church. Those are all from Uncle Chad. He is the one that has all those church songs.

Me: I would love to listen to you i-pod. Thanks.

Him: The only other kind of music I have on there is classic rock.

Me: Classic rock? I bet Annie put all of that on for you.

Him: Actually, it was Abby. She put Sadie Hawkins Dance on for me. That is the kind of music she listens to. You know, classic rock.

Door Number 2

I won't lie. I have been tanning. My normally pasty white skin is now a beautiful olive color. The same color that my sister-in-law has every single day of her life. Except in the summer when she is a golden shade of brown. Jealous? Yes I am.

I have been tanning at the movie rental place. Just so happens that they have announced that they are shutting the doors. So I decided I needed to get a move on my remaining tans. So today I pulled up and the place was packed. I guess everybody was wanting to get a bargain since all the previously viewed movies were 20% off. Honestly, I have NEVER seen that many people in the place. Ever.

So - I go in and the clerk sends me to door #2. I shut the door. It doesn't lock. The lock seems to be broken. So I head out to the counter and I tell the girl that the door is broken. She asks me if I mean that the lock is broken and I reply "Yes. THE DOOR LOCK does not work!" The other girl said "That lock is tricky and neither one of has figured out the trick yet but nobody will walk in on you."

Nobody will walk in on me? Are you kidding?

By this time all of the goof-balls looking for their goofy previously viewed movies that nobody has ever even heard of are now staring at me. Listening. The entire store has heard that DOOR #2 DOESN'T LOCK!

The clerk giggles, "We will make sure that nobody walks in on you."

Really? Will she dive over the counter, past the Hot Tamales and Mike & Ikes, and stand guard over the door the first time one of those snotty nose little boys runs away from his mom and opens the door? I think not.

"Really. You will be perfectly safe."

So I head to the room. I move the chair and trash can in front of the door and I tan.

For fifteen minutes all that I could think of was that I seriously needed my head examined.

That was the dumbest thing I have done all week. Not counting the fact that I am even laying in a tanning bed in the first place.

Poetry

Rain Rain go away
come again some other day
because the house I live in is really old
and when I go home it will feel quiet cold
and that basement that sprung a leak last May?
I don't want to go home and have it flooded today
You make me anxious and not very happy
In fact, my mood is down right crabby
My deck is all wet. My porch is, too
All I want is for the sky to be blue

are we there yet?

It seems as if I am mostly organized. I have files for receipts. Files for paid bills. Files for important papers. I have an organized kitchen and pantry. My closet isn't too bad, either.

My photo's, however, are a complete mess.

I had full intentions of having these pictures all organized by now but you know, life happened. I had three kids. I work outside the home. We've tackled a couple of house projects over the years. Eventually, those pictures have taken on a life of their own and have long since outgrew the shoe boxes and have found their way into two Rubbermaid tubs. These two big Rubbermaids hold my life for over 24 years. And tonight, my world was spread all over my floor. Because when you do something for one daughter by default you get to do it for the other daughter. Thus - the scrapbook for baby sister has began.

It's funny how I have arrived here. 40 something, mother of two grown daughters, and I'm not so sure how it happened. I'm still trying to figure out at what point in the journey time catapulted me into the future. I felt the jolt of that reality tonight.

First bath. First steps. Easter bonnet. First day of preschool. Trips to the zoo. Sleepy heads in Christmas P.J's. Sesame Street Birthday Cakes. Micky Mouse balloons. Bicycles without training wheels. Kindergarten floats. Lost teeth. Gap teeth. Halloween parade. Field trips. Vacations.DARE programs. Adorable cheerleader. Eighth Grade recognition. Piano recitals. First homecoming. First prom. All those milestones. All those years. All those hairstyles (ok. those would be mine).

I think most days I was trying to make it through the day without going insane. Or maybe it was that most days were so routine I did not appreciate the uniqueness in each of them. Do we all do that or is it just me?

Have you ever driven home from somewhere and suddenly you pull into the garage and can't recall actually driving there? That is exactly how I feel tonight.

Oh Happy Day!

If you look really close you can see the words GLUTEN FREE! Rice Chex are now gluten free!! Do you know what that means? I can buy a regular sized box of cereal at a regular price from a regular store!
Oh! The things that bring me joy these days.

Say what?!

We have yet another new Webkinz at our house. So, this evening I left Abe upstairs, playing Go Fish, with Grandma. Only Grandma wasn't at our house. She was at her house. They were playing via Webkinz. After a short time, Abe came down into the kitchen.

Me: Are you finished playing Go Fish?
Him: I am. Grandma won.
Me: Is Grandma finished?
Him: No. She is still playing.
Me: Why did you quit?
Him: Because Grandma is playing with TWO BIG FAT DUCKS!

Come Sail Away

I have had fun remembering my proms. Have times changed or what? Something old thing that is new again are colored tuxes. I love to see the boys personality come out, too. The dresses don't hold a candle to the 80's, though. You just can' beat a Gunne Sax. Lace and Calico. What's not to love?

When I went to Randy's junior prom (I was a sophomore) it was way cool to go to another schools prom. After prom the movie theater, skating rink and bowling alley were open all night. I am sad to say I was not his date for his senior prom. We happen to be on hiatus that year.

My proms..... were only for the junior and senior class of our tiny school. No out of town dates. That meant 60 people-max. Our lunch cooks made our dinner and we had printed napkins with our prom theme and a program. Which would have been our high school mixed ensemble singing. Dinner was in the middle school lunch room. We moved on to the high school lunch room for our dance with all of the chairs lined up around the edge. Our decorations were some streamers and the big silver disco ball (which I take full credit for - we purchased it when I was on Stuco).

When we were seniors we convinced the teacher in charge to let us bring our out-of-town dates. Otherwise, us girls weren't coming. The out-of-town boys still weren't allowed to eat dinner with us but they were allowed to meet us at the dance. That was the year that the bad boys of the city crashed the small school prom. I can't even begin to tell you the stunts that they pulled because one of those crazy boys is the father of my children. There was plenty of REO, Styx, and Journey. And our after prom was a trip to a truck stop to eat breakfast at 1 a.m. Yippee!

Those were the days!

Choosy moms choose Jiff

I'm sure my kids have said something funny. Or annoying. But mostly what sticks (no pun intended) out about this past week is peanut butter.

Because I eat peanut butter Panda Puffs for breakfast. Everyday. And I have a rice cake with peanut butter for lunch. Everyday. And sometimes for supper. And when Randy asks me how that can possible fill me up I want to hit him because he can eat whatever he wants to. Do I even worry about being "full"? No. I do not. My main concern is to just sustain this life I have been given and I have chosen to do that with peanut butter-thankyouverymuch.

For the second time in 1 week I am going to a BBQ. And I will request my hamburger without a bun. Oh! And please make sure the meat doesn't even touch a bun. Or come in contact with the spatula if it the spatula has touched a bun. Oh! And please don't put my burger on a plate with the other burgers in buns. MY BURGER CANNOT TOUCH A BUN. What am I trying to say? I CANNOT EVEN LOOK AT A BUN! And please, people, don't eat your burger with a bun, and then stick your hands inside the chip bag because then those chips will be cross contaminated. This is not the Atkins diet, people. It is not an allergy. It is an intolerance. No. I am not over exaggerating.

See why I prefer rice cakes and peanut butter?

Best of times.

4 days until Viva Las Vegas.

Saturday will be the fifth prom between the girls. We've survived prom dress shopping. Hair appointments (sometimes disastrous). Nails. Make-up. Tanning. Jewelry. Pictures all over town. Flowers. Bad dates. Fun dates. Progressive dinners. After prom breakfast. Prom construction. Prom tear-downs. Moving prom stuff out of storage. Moving prom stuff to storage. After prom sponsor. Prom sponsor. Promenades.

Prom is lots of work. Lots of time. Lots of stress.

Am I crazy to be sad that these days will be over forever? Because I am. So sad.
